Laundering
· Upon changing, shake solids into toilet, fold over washing tabs and remove inserts, place in diaper pail (diaper pail liner is recommended).
· When you are ready to wash, dump diaper pail liner contents into the washer. Throw the bag right in as well.
· Do a quick cold rinse or soak, no detergent.
· Add 2-3 tsps of Rockin Green (details below) or ¼ scoop of Country Save detergent to the wash and start a hot wash (cold rinse to follow is fine).
· Do an extra rinse (cold is fine).
· Throw diapers and inserts into the dryer on medium or high heat. Wet bags, Covers, Shells and Diaper Pail Liners can be hung to dry (they dry really quickly).
First Time User: the mission is to de-funk your diapers! To get rid of built up minerals and left over detergent do the following:
- Fill your washer with hot water and 3 Tbsp* of Rockin’ Green, along with your diapers.
- Let it soak for approximately 30-60 minutes. Then launder as usual, skipping the soap. If you have a HE machine, you may have to consult your manual but you can usually do a soak by pressing the start or pause button.
Tip: Repeat this process anytime you need a good deep-cleaning. If your diapers have excessive buildup or residue, it may take a few soaks to get them in good condition. For those with really hard water, you may find a quick soak before every wash helpful.
Washing Instructions: washing diapers and clothing should not be a complicated ordeal. Forget everything that you have heard, and keep it simple. You don‘t need extra boosters or add-ons with Rockin’ Green.
- Savor the smell of your Rockin’ Green detergent
ahh
yummy
.
- Dump your diapers/clothes into the washer and do a cold rinse/wash to get the nasties out prior to the wash cycle. The more water, the better!
- Add the detergent and do a hot wash. Use 2-3 Tbsp* per load. For HE machines or those with soft water use 1-2 Tbsp*. Rockin’ Green is good for clothes and diapers. So toss a couple tablespoons in there!
- Double Rinse.
- Enjoy your clean fluff!
Continue to use Rockin’ Green to keep the stinkies at bay.
*If you have soft water, you may need less detergent than that indicated. So start with 1 tbs, and go up from there as needed.
Rinsing: Rockin’ Green is a clean rinsing formula, so many people find that they can eliminate extra rinses from the end of their wash routine. Which saves time and money!
Rockin’ Green makes the diaper laundry FUN again!
Will the scented oils cause problems with my diapers? There is approximately 10 drops of natural fragrance oil per 45 load batch so the amount of oil in each load is negligible. The oils used in Rockin’ Green are 100% natural, so the risk of irritation is much less than other scented products on the market.
The Scoop on Detergents
What to Look For in a Detergent
At best, a detergent to be used on your baby's diapers would NOT contain enzymes, dyes, perfumes, optical brighteners or any other component designed to be left on your diapers after washing.
Specialty detergents with fabric softeners or wrinkle guards will not be suitable; however, a detergent with non-chlorine bleach or oxygen bleaching capabilities may be fine. And just to be clear, soaps are not detergents, and soaps are generally not suitable for washing diapers.
Top Detergents
Our favorite detergents are Rockin Green and Country Save. These are two of the few environmentally safe detergents that our customers have stated works wonderfully for their everyday laundry as well.
Some other environmentally safe detergents that we recommend are:
- Allen's Naturally Powder/Liquid Standard & HE compatible
- Mountain Green Free & Clear Standard & HE
- Nellie's All Natural Laundry Soda Standard & HE
- Planet Ultra Liquid
- Planet Ultra Powder Standard & HE compatible
- Planet 2X Ultra Standard & HE
Detergents to Avoid
Natural soaps often contain various oils. These should NOT be used because they will leave a residue on fleece, causing it to repel liquids.
The use of any of these detergents listed below will void the warranty of our products. The use of any free and clear formulas may cause a waxy build up that will cause the diapers to repel and no longer work. We also very specifically do not recommend the use of Sportwash, Sensi-Clean, Charlie’s, due to the possibility of severe burn like reactions that can happen the first time of use or months after successful use. Due to the nature of these detergents the use of them will void all warranties of the Happy Heinys products. The use of chlorine bleach will also void all warranties and can lead to the breakdown of the waterproof layer of our fabric making the diaper unusable.
Avoid:
- Dr. Bronner’s Soap
- 7th Generation
- Bio-Kleen
- Ivory Snow
- Dreft
- Charlie’s
- Any ALL free detergents
- Sport-Wash & Sensi-Clean have the potential for detergent burn in babies.
Never use fabric softener of any kind on reusable diapers. Liquid fabric softeners and dryer sheets both leave a waxy residue which causes fleece to repel urine and decreases the absorbency of other diapers.
Diaper rash creams can also cause repelling. For best results either place a small cloth wipe on top of the fleece or use a liner. We recommend Bum Bum Balm and no liner is required when using as recommended. |
